CHEMCAD was applied as a<br>thermodynamic and phase\u2010equilibrium modeling tool, enabling rapid miscibility assessment without the<br>need for specialized reservoir simulation software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accurate determination of the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) between injected CO\u2082 and crude oil is a critical design requirement for miscible CO\u2082\u2010EOR projects. However:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experimental MMP measurements are time\u2010consuming and expensive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early\u2010stage studies often lack access to dedicated reservoir simulators<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crude oils exhibit complex, multicomponent compositions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenge was to determine whether CHEMCAD, a process simulator, could reliably predict CO\u2082\u2013oil miscibility and MMP values without tuning to experimental PVT data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHEMCAD v7.1.8 was used to model CO\u2082\u2013oil phase behavior using the FLASH unit operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Modeling Approach<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Crude oils represented as n\u2010alkane pseudo\u2010components (C6\u2013C25+)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heavy fractions lumped into a C25 pseudo\u2010component<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soave\u2013Redlich\u2013Kwong (SRK) equation of state<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Standard van der Waals mixing rules<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No EOS tuning or experimental matching applied<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sensitivity Studies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CO\u2082\u2010to\u2010oil mass ratio<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gas\u2013oil ratio (GOR)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dead oil vs. live oil systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simulation Configuration<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gaseous CO\u2082 feed stream<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Liquid crude\u2010oil feed stream<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optional light\u2010gas stream (95 mol% CH\u2084, 5 mol% C\u2082H\u2086) to represent live oil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Iterative pressure increase to identify the lowest pressure at which no free CO\u2082 gas phase remained after flashing \u2192 defined as first\u2010contact MMP<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/flumen.clients.cake.fm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/CS-CHEMCAD-C02-Oil-MMP-Prediction_26_05.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read the article<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This case study focuses exclusively on the use of CHEMCAD process simulation software to predictCO\u2082\u2013oil minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) and phase behavior.
